Beacon Heights Preschool Director Job Opening and Description

Beacon Heights Preschool is a ministry of Beacon Heights Church of the Brethren. It is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). It is a play based program that strives to give children a safe, loving environment that utilizes best practices for teaching and guiding 2-5 year olds. To reflect the mission of Beacon Heights Church of the Brethren, there is a special focus on peace, justice and inclusiveness. We teach ways in which children are alike and different, and to appreciate each other’s “specialness.”

We are currently recruiting for a Director of this program, to begin June 1, 2023 at 6 hours a week administrative responsibilities through the summer. Starting a week or two before school begins in September, the position will shift to 12-15 hours a week administrative work, and at least 12-15 hours a week teaching once school begins. Hourly compensation will be determined based on educational level and experience teaching preschoolers. There are no additional benefits outside of the hourly compensation.

The Director is accountable to the Beacon Heights Church of the Brethren Church Board and will participate in an annual performance review with such person(s) the board designates.

Qualifications for the position:

  • Love for children and a passion for teaching and continual improvement.

  • Demonstrated leadership and administrative skills.

  • Demonstrated commitment to Early Childhood Education best practices through education, courses, workshops etc.

  • Preschool teaching experience in an established program, preferably an accredited one.

  • Degree in Early Childhood Education preferred but not required.

  • No criminal record or child-related offenses.

Responsibilities:

Staffing:

  • Oversee the daily operation of the preschool.

  • Recruit and hire staff as needed.

  • Orient, train, supervise, support, help build the knowledge and skills of staff. Conduct annual evaluations. Address any concerns

professionally and promptly.

Families:

  • Prepare and conduct family orientation at the beginning of the school year.

  • Utilize many methods of communicating with families, including but not limited to: newsletters, social media, preschool website, parent handbook, special family activities.

  • Meet with families promptly if there are any concerns regarding their child. Assist teaching staff as needed to prepare for meetings of this nature.

Children:

  • Keep all important registration and health records of each child. Safety is the first priority.

  • Educate staff on any children with special needs and ideas for best practices with them, as well as best practices teaching all children.

  • Teach a minimum of 12-15 hours a week.

Classrooms:

  • Help staff set up each classroom at the beginning of the school year and break down at the end of the school year and store items appropriately.

  • Purchase needed snacks, supplies, equipment, educational curriculum needs.

Financial Record Keeping:

  • Maintain financial records of the monthly preschool budget; reconcile preschool accounting with the church’s bookkeeper. Submit payroll.

  • Apply for grants to supplement funding for preschool.

  • Collect tuition from families.

  • Create and submit a fiscal year budget to the Preschool Advisory Board for approval annually.

  • Create and maintain a salary pay structure and tuition scale for families.

  • Provide avenue for families to apply for scholarships, and make recommendations for recipients. Keep records, determine criteria for scholarships.

Accreditation:

  • Organize and maintain activities and documentation needed to continue being accredited by the National Association for the Education of the Young Child.

Church Relations:

  • Report to church board annually and as requested at other times.

  • Prepare for and attend preschool advisory committee meetings as scheduled, providing financial reports and overall evaluation of program.

  • Communicate with church board and pastoral staff about any additional concerns and promote interactive activities between preschoolers, their families, and church activities.
